Methodology
We are conducting this primary research in an attempt to understand and develop our understanding of the pop genre from these select music videos; as we analyse and discuss the unique conventions, themes and basic understanding of the music video and what it implies unto the audience.
We have decided to create a Pop music video, which has an intresting narrive to the music videos by not taking attention away from the song, but accompanying the audio to create a better visual experience that also helps tell a story that is trying to be portrayed through the audio of the song. Alongside this, we will be trying to identify different information about Pop since it is such a popular genre, that takes up the majority of the music industry. We imagine with the current generation that the interest in the Pop genre is very huge with people of this generation looking to these Pop stars as idols and I imagine the youngest people would start looking up to these Pop stars is around 12-13 years of age, and will probably continue up to around the age of 16-17, as anyone over the age of 17-18 are probably not interested in what pele are doing in a music video and are more interested in their own lives.
Our primary research will include research from small focus groups, of people within the age category of 13-17, with some potential focus groups slightly above this age to check we have not misinterpreted the intended age cagory. Alongside this we will be producing questionnaires on Survey Monkey to question the desired audience on what they are interested in about the Pop genre, both visually and sound wise. However we also have critical questionnaires that will make the participants question hat they like and don’t like which we can use to our advantage to create a much more enjoyable music video. Alongside this we have been able to contact and discuss with members of the media industry working on music videos to help us create the best industry grade music video possible.
We will also be analysing different music videos under the VEVO “YouTube “channel, that provides the main source of music videos for people to watch. By analysing both the visual element and the audio aspect we will be able to create a video that binds both of the medias together. From this we will be able to create a visual platform that will give a better understanding / depth to the music vie that will create a better viewing experience.
For our secondary research we will be focusing on the quantitative and qualitative research from the information gathered from our analysis from “Youtube””Survey Monkey”and the music top 50’s music lists to help us gather the different information so we can create an effective and productive music video. However our secondary research will have to be checked and considered to ensure that the information given is relative to our studies.

“Pop” genre Music Videos research
The genre of Pop is one of the biggest within the music / music video industry because of its popularity within the youth. Alongside this it has millions of pounds pumped into it by investors and production companies like Fox Television, or DJ Khaled’s production companies Cash Money Records, We the best music group and Epic Records. An average music video (as stated by https://www.indigoprod.com) ranges from £20,000, to £500,000 for a song made by a high end production company. From this we can see that music videos cost a large amount of money, and needs a lot of different permissions / hire costs for equipment and land rental.
Some of the biggest Pop genre artists are people such as DJ Khaled, Justin Bieber, Selena Gomez, Miley Cyrus, Katy Perry, Taylor Swift, Lady Gaga, Rihanna, Beyoncé, etc.
When looking at the amount of income that comes from music videos, or particularly VEVO on YouTube, we can identify with the help of www.businessinsider.com/how-much-money-youtube-stars-actually-make-2014-2 we can identify that approximately 1,000 ad views creates approximately $7.60; in which music videos like Despacito by Justin Bieber that make around 3.8 billion views, and when divided by 1000 and then multiplied by $7
(3,800,000,000 / 1000) = Ans (3.800.000) – ANS * 7.62 = $28,956,000
The music video for the song Despacito costs around £300,000 to make hire shoot and edit; which just shows how much a music video can make financially alongside the large amount they can cost
A key fact about the pop genre is that it originated in the UK around 1950, and has become the most popular genre in the last few years with certain pop stars making the genre what it is today.
Quite an interesting point to consider about modern pop artists have a very important role when it comes to appearance as a majority of the female pop artists today seem to have a music video that has quite a sexually suggestive vibe to it, as seen its certain music videos like
· Katy Perry – I kissed a girl
· Miley Cyrus – Wrecking Ball (After she tried to divide herself between her Hannah Montana background everyone knows herself as)
· Nicki Minaj – Superbase

Short
Change Hero
Idea 1:
Woodland area / Outside & nature
based
I believe that the woods
and nature based areas would be very good for this music video, thanks to the
juxtaposition of some of the harsh natured words and themes to the music, mixed
with the peaceful and light nature around. Alongside this with my research I
have found that the band “The Heavy” has made music videos before with the same
conventions, that we believe would make the music video more in place with what
the band feels fits their music video right. Alongside this, it wouldn’t be too
hard booking the area, as public land is free to use (to a degree). Meanwhile,
the location would vary depending on where about we are going which can change
how easy it is to get some transport. Content wise we would have the band
playing and moving around through the forest and making it look natural.
Idea 2:
Abandoned Warehouse
I think that using an abandoned
warehouse or factory would help to set the tone of the music video as the music
video has very deep lyrics relating to crime and negative atmospheres, which we
can relate the area of an abandoned warehouse. From this, we can identify that
there is a clear atmosphereic connection that works together well. Having an
abandoned warehouse would be hard to to book, but I believe that with the right
equipment and permissions we can make this warehouse very effective.
Idea 3:
Drama studio
The drama studio is very
good, as we can use the wide open space to fil.m lots of movements quite easy,
meanwhile the location is quite easy to access as it is within the college, and
does not need much booking in advance. Basic contact needs to be made in order
to book the room so that we can book and afternoon or evening to film. This would
be ideal, as moving all of the equipment will be quite hard, but we can easily
move everything from cars into the studio quite easily at the college.

These sort of female artists used
sexually suggestive images / styles to make the videos much more popular to
help fund their career and give them more popularity. What this does is give
the musician a platform to begin their career on. This is very common in my
findings that a lot of female artists do this, whereas a lot of male pop
artists use items like cars, money, gold, style of clothing and other expensive
items within their music video to make it more appealing to everyone. Alongside
this it is quite common to see a male artist include some women again being
quite sexualised to help create a popular platform for the artist’s music
career.
