“Pop” genre Music Videos research
The genre of Pop is one of the
biggest within the music / music video industry because of its popularity
within the youth. Alongside this it has millions of pounds pumped into it by
investors and production companies like Fox Television, or DJ Khaled’s production
companies Cash Money Records, We the best music group and Epic Records. An
average music video (as stated by https://www.indigoprod.com) ranges from £20,000, to £500,000 for a song made by a
high end production company. From this we can see that music videos cost a
large amount of money, and needs a lot of different permissions / hire costs
for equipment and land rental.
Some of the biggest Pop genre
artists are people such as DJ Khaled, Justin Bieber, Selena Gomez, Miley Cyrus,
Katy Perry, Taylor Swift, Lady Gaga, Rihanna, Beyoncé, etc.
When looking at the amount of
income that comes from music videos, or particularly VEVO on YouTube, we can
identify with the help of www.businessinsider.com/how-much-money-youtube-stars-actually-make-2014-2 we can identify that approximately 1,000 ad views
creates approximately $7.60; in which music videos like Despacito by Justin
Bieber that make around 3.8 billion views, and when divided by 1000 and then
multiplied by $7
(3,800,000,000 / 1000) = Ans
(3.800.000) – ANS * 7.62 = $28,956,000
The music video for the song
Despacito costs around £300,000 to make hire shoot and edit; which just shows
how much a music video can make financially alongside the large amount they can
cost
A key fact about the pop genre is
that it originated in the UK around
1950, and has become the most popular genre in the last few years with certain
pop stars making the genre what it is today.
Quite an interesting point to
consider about modern pop artists have a very important role when it comes to
appearance as a majority of the female pop artists today seem to have a music
video that has quite a sexually suggestive vibe to it, as seen its certain
music videos like
· Katy Perry – I kissed a girl
· Miley Cyrus – Wrecking Ball (After she tried to divide
herself between her Hannah Montana background everyone knows herself as)
· Nicki Minaj – Superbase
These sort of female artists used
sexually suggestive images / styles to make the videos much more popular to
help fund their career and give them more popularity. What this does is give
the musician a platform to begin their career on. This is very common in my
findings that a lot of female artists do this, whereas a lot of male pop
artists use items like cars, money, gold, style of clothing and other expensive
items within their music video to make it more appealing to everyone. Alongside
this it is quite common to see a male artist include some women again being
quite sexualised to help create a popular platform for the artist’s music
career.
